The Gospel of Mark, although second in order in our Bibles, is considered the oldest of the four canonical gospels. It is a gospel, literally, the good news of Jesus Christ as Messiah and Savior. This gospel was written during a particularly hard time in the life of the Christian community of Rome during the persecutions of the Emperor Nero. It is a gospel that encourages the faithful to persevere during times of trials when doubt begins to plague believers. It is a Gospel which outlines the demands of discipleship - even when one's understanding is incomplete. Mark's Gospel asks that trust be a hallmark of one's journey with God.
