What Is the Diocese of St. Petersburg
    Doing About Homelessness?

For more than 15 years Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Petersburg has been building and managing affordable housing projects in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Catholic Charities’ Shelter Ministries includes housing for the elderly (HUD 202), HIV/Aids patients, farm workers (San Jose Mission) and Bethany Family Apartments (for the disabled). More recently Catholic Charities has open and operated Pinellas Hope, a temporary shelter/housing facility that provides homeless men and women a place to stay, privacy, and a place to leave their belongings during the day. It is not the ideal situation – affordable housing is – but it follows the intention of the National Alliance to End Homelessness’ vision Housing First™ in providing intervention, housing and case management.
