Aren’t there homeless services, both public and private in Hillsborough County?
Yes there are. Here is a partial list of those services.
If you follow these links, what you will discover is that by-and-large, these agencies help families who are economically homeless, women with children, and single women – and most often with “affordable housing.” They do wonderful service. They generally do not take in single men and women for temporary or transient housing. If there is a history of mental illness or substance abuse, then there are additional barriers to housing placement. This is especially true for many of the chronic homeless.

Aren’t there homeless shelters available in the county?
Yes there are. The Salvation Army operates such an emergency shelter near downtown Tampa. All in all, there are approximately 1,460 temporary beds (emergency and transitional) available to homeless men, women, and children on any given night. This means there are only enough beds for 15% of the homeless people in Hillsborough County. The vast majority of those beds are not available to the most needy of homeless. See a list of the shelters here.
