PROBATION/PROMOTION
Probation
A student may be placed on probation for serious or continued misconduct, modeling
unacceptable attitude or behavior, embarrassment to our school, or if two or more
academic subjects are failed in a grading period. Probation is a trial period during
which a student’s behavior and/or academic progress is closely monitored and teacher/staff
recommendations are carried through. A meeting will be held with the principal, guidance
counselor, teacher and parents when a child is placed on academic or disciplinary probation.
A requirement for a student on probation may be formal psychological evaluation, ongoing
professional counseling, and regular meetings with the school guidance counselor or tutoring.
Promotion and Retention
A student will be promoted upon satisfactorily completing the grade level curriculum. A
parent-teacher conference will be scheduled before the end of the third quarter if a student
might not be promoted. A student who fails one core subject must participate in a remedial
program. Failure of two core subjects will result in remediation or retention at the discretion
of the principal. Failure of three or more core subjects will result in retention. Remediation
must take place in a Catholic school within the Diocese of St. Petersburg, or by a certified
teacher in the subject area contracted by the parent and approved by the principal, or a
remediation program which has been approved by the principal. Prior to the beginning of the
next school year the principal must receive validation of attendance, and proof of proficiency
in the subject area(s) including work samples and test scores. Failure to meet these guidelines
will result in retention.
The inability of a student to meet the total curriculum requirements of the school program
within the school year due to lack of application, ability or maturity may result in the
student being retained or asked to find alternative placement.
