    Religious Studies

Religious instruction in the Jesuit tradition is essential to the total education of the maturing student. Sacred Heart Academy exists primarily to provide this religious dimension. Only those interested in such a program should be enrolled here. All students at Sacred Heart Academy will follow the program of religious studies provided in the regular curriculum and will participate in school liturgies and community celebration days. Students will attend daily Morning Prayer and Mass on Fridays and on Holy Days of Obligation. Individual classes will be responsible for the weekly Mass preparation.

    Grading System

The grading system differs for Kindergarten, grades 1 – 2 and grades 3 – 8. Grades are not merely an average of test scores. They reflect the student’s daily work, participation, projects, assignments, test scores and extra work.

    Gr. K – 2 Gr. 3 – 8 Description
E A = 90 – 100 Excellent Knowledge of subject matter, completeness in work, contributes to discussions, correct use of grammar and spelling.
VG B = 80 – 89 Good knowledge of subject matter, completeness in work, worthwhile contributions to class discussions.
S C = 70 – 79 Adequate knowledge of subject matter, required work fair, contributes when called upon.
N D = 65 – 69 Poor work or study habits, lack of preparation, little discussion, low test grades.
U F = 64 and below Unsatisfactory knowledge of subject matter, incomplete assignments, failing test grades.
    Inc Inc Incomplete work.

    Special Subjects Grading scale

In grades 3-8 special subjects use S-satisfactory, U-unsatisfactory, N-needs improvement

    Honor Roll for Grades 3 – 8

    Principal’s Honor Roll All A’s
High Honor Roll A’s and B’s
    Merit Honor Roll All B’s

Effort code of 4 (unsatisfactory effort), U (unsatisfactory conduct), or an Incomplete in any core or special subject will keep a student from the Honor Roll.

    Effort Awards for Grades 1-8

A student must have a 1 or 2 in effort in order to receive an effort award.

    Make-Up Work

At the discretion of the teacher, students are required to make up class work, tests, homework, and/or special assignments given during an absence. Students will be given 1 school day for each day missed to make up their missed assignments and tests. Extended absences for illness and/or death of an immediate family member will require an alternate plan. Students in grades 5 – 8 are required to assume the responsibility for arranging a schedule with each teacher to make up work. Make-up work is the student’s responsibility, not the teacher’s. Report cards may reflect an incomplete grade if absence occurs at exam/report card time. An incomplete grade will be changed to “F” if work is not completed within 15 school days of the report card being issued.
