Hello, I’m Al Garsys, Athletic Director and Physical Education teacher. This will be my sixth year teaching and coaching at Sacred Heart Academy. I received my BS and MS degrees in Physical Education from the University of Massachusetts. Additionally, I spent a major portion of my life serving in the United States Marine Corps before returning to teaching.
The physical education program focuses on developing fitness, teaching the fundamental skills of various sports, and enjoying games and activities. As a school, we participate in the President’s Fitness Challenge Program and field sports teams for boys and girls in the Catholic Youth Athletic Association and Catholic Youth Sports League.
A Welcome Letter addresses my expectations for the physical education classroom. A separate letter on Athletics provides all the information necessary regarding levels of competition, parental permission, physical examinations and volunteer drivers.
Let us have a safe and an enjoyable school year!

Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome back!
This letter is to inform you about the physical education program. It is my pleasure to provide your child with positive physical learning experiences. Each child will be given the opportunity to improve and enhance his/her overall physical development. Age appropriate activities will be conducted to ensure that each child’s maximum potential be reached. EVERY student must be active in PE class.
In keeping with school policy, your child must change into the designated PE uniform (shirt, shorts, white socks and non-marking sport shoes) and participate. The policy for not dressing out and participating will be an automatic reduction in the student’s grade relative to the number of PE classes missed for the marking period. If a student is not dressed out, he/she will not be allowed to participate.
A key emphasis of our physical education program is fitness and its continual improvement. Accordingly, our expectations are that each child in grades 1 – 8 be able to jog for five minutes by the end of the first marking period. The standard for EC3, EC4, and Kindergarten is three minutes, four minutes and four and one-half minutes respectively. Jogging means that the child is not walking. Most of the students have attained this level of fitness already. For students needing additional time to reach this level of fitness, I am looking for a pattern of continual improvement i.e. jogging a few seconds longer each time they have PE until they reach their goal.
Please cut out and return bottom portion to me.

Let’s work hard to improve physical fitness.
If you and your child would sign your names below indicating your understanding and willingness to comply with the rules, then we can look forward to great year!!!!

Dear Student-Athletes,
Sacred Heart Academy student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to participate in competitive athletics that are governed by Diocesan Guidelines for Interscholastic Athletics: Elementary and Middle Catholic Schools. Boys varsity and junior varsity basketball, varsity and junior varsity track, as well as girls varsity basketball, varsity and junior varsity track, varsity volleyball and varsity softball are just some of the sports that our school has participated in.
The key question that I have to answer to the organizing entities at the beginning of each school year – Catholic Youth League Association (Boys) and Catholic Youth Sports League (Girls) – is which teams will Sacred Heart Academy field this year. As a rule, they expect an answer by the September 1st along with the associated entrance fees.
To answer this question, I have developed this sign-up sheet, as well as attached the necessary paperwork to comply with the Diocesan Guidelines.
Prior to making a commitment to participate, I would like you to think about the following:
1. Sixth graders may participate both in varsity and junior varsity competition.
However, if a sixth grader participates in varsity competition, he/she may not return to junior varsity status.
2. Junior varsity is limited to fifth and sixth graders.
3. Varsity competition is limited to seventh and eighth graders.
4. Once you commit to participating in a sport, please realize that we expect to see you at practice and at games. Dropping out may cause forfeits or an inability to field a team. This is costly because we still have to pay the referees, entrance fees, or in some cases penalty fees.
In order for you to participate, the following administrative paperwork must be completed:
1. Athletic Participation Form
2. Pre-participation Physical Evaluation
3. Volunteer Driver Information
If you plan to participate in more than one sport, please write it in the Permission and Release Statement. We will not need any additional paperwork for the rest of the year. Upon completion of the paperwork, please turn it in to your respective coach or the Athletic Director. All paperwork will be kept in the Athletic Director’s office.
Parents may drive their own children to practices and/or games. Parents driving other children must complete the Volunteer Driver Information Form.
